We’ve all made jokes about it … The infamous “Crack is wack” line delivered by Whitney Houston will probably be etched into human vernacular forever. I know countless people who dressed up as Tyron Biggums, the undeniably honest and humorous crack addict as portrayed by Dave Chappell, for Halloween. But for many, drug abuse is no laughing matter.

For those effected by substance abuse, it is a very serious matter. According to the most recent data from WhiteHouse.gov, Louisiana is one of the top ten states of recorded cases of abuse of non-prescription pain killers. The drug-induced death rate in Louisiana is higher than the national average. And, roughly 4% of Louisiana residents admitted to using an illegal drug (other than marijuana) within the last month. Again, this is another statistic that is higher than the national average, no pun intended.

I used to be oblivious to the seriousness of substance abuse in Louisiana until I began working at Cenikorwhich is a nonprofit facility in Baton Rouge that provides substance abuse rehabilitation services. I’ve witnessed first hand patients enter the facility broken and agitated, but leave mended, encouraged and with a realistic plan of how to remain sober and become active citizens.

Cenikor is able to provide these much needed services largely in part by the support and financial backing of the community. And, this is where YOU can help!
